20 Black Friday sales to take advantage of in South Africa
Black Friday occurs after America’s day of Thanksgiving where retailers offer bargain basement deals. It also marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Traditionally, this ‘sale day’ has been celebrated in America only but it’s crept to other parts of the world and now South Africans get discounts too, but only at certain retailers. But not all deals are legitimate, which is why it’s so important that you don’t get conned by people purporting to be a retailer and offering a Black Friday deal.
To avoid the scams, Angelique Ruzicka does a roundup of some (legitimate) Black Friday deals that have landed in her inbox:
- Bidvest McCarthy
It says it is hosting their largest ever one-day sale. The Black Friday Sale will start at 00:00 and end at 00:00, the following day – giving you a 24-hour opportunity to get your hands on ‘outrageous’ vehicle savings.
This household products specialist will have up to 50% off on household appliances on Black Friday.
This retailer is offering up to 50% off. They claim it’s going to be bigger and better than ever before. Sign up here to get Black Friday deals in your inbox.
Clicks is currently in the midst of its Black Friday offering which can only be found online. They started their sale early and it runs from 21 – 24 November, so hurry if you want to take advantage of its online bargains. You can either collect your items in store or delivery is free for purchases over R300.
- Cyber Cellar
This e-commerce site which specialises in selling wine, beer, spirts and more is currently in the swing of its Black Friday sale, which ends on 26 November at midnight. Get up to 49% off on popular brands it said in an email to me.
- Dion Wired
Get up to 50% off if you buy online with Dion Wired this Black Friday. You can sign up for the newsletter alert here.
- Easy Equities
If you register and get FICA’d on the 25 November or 28 November Easy Equities will give you R100. This also applies for those who have already registered but haven’t been FICA’d. If you’ve already registered and FICA’d you will instead pay no brokerage fees on both days. These deals apply between 9am and 5pm on Friday 25 November and Monday 28 November. “Any brokerage fees will be refunded to you on Tuesday 29 November, and likewise if you earn the R100 bucks, that’ll be in your account on Tuesday as well,” say Easy Equities in their newsletter.
Game says it will have big savings come Black Friday and their doors will open at 7am. Their website claims to have some early bird specials up for Thursday, 24 November. Sign up here to get their deals. They’re also having a ‘Cyber Monday’, so be sure to check out what they have on offer online.
- Incredible Connection
It’s not clear what the discounts will be but Incredible Connection claim there will be ‘incredibly slashed prices’ on Black Friday. Registered customers enjoy a head start by accessing deal previews two hours ahead of everyone else. There will be two sets of deals: One set releasing at midnight and the other at 8am.
Save up to 45% on selected products over the ‘Black Friday Weekend’ (25 – 27 November). Look online as it also says there are some exclusive offers that may interest you. However, Makro warns that online orders can take up to 21 days to fulfil.
- Mr Price
This clothing and home products specialist is encouraging shoppers to enter into their ‘scratch to reveal your deal’ for their Black ‘Fiveday’ Promo, which will give you a promo code. This code will give you a discount at the end of your shop.
- Nic Harry
Nic Harry was founded in 2012 by Nic Haralambous and his partner Jennifer Wynne. It’s a specialist sock stockist (mainly aimed at men) but it also sells other accessories such as ties, lapel pins, pocket squares, scarves etc. Nic Harry are offering 20% off on Black Friday on everything in store and online.

- Pick n Pay
Get up to 50% off says Pick n Pay on its Facebook page. The deals will only apply on Black Friday. Check their discounts here.
Beauty chain, Sorbet, is offering 10% off all its retail products. So you can get discounts on skincare, haircare, nail care, Christmas Gift Sets, bath and beauty products and more.
If you’ve always wanted to improve you knowledge of investing there are a range of courses offered on discounts of up to 40% through Sharenet between the 23 – 27 November.
- The Body Shop
This store specialises in lotions and potions and all those sorts of things to make you look clean and beautiful. Get 30% off all gift sets between the 24 -27 November.
From 25 – 28 November 2016 only, Travelstart have got exclusive Black Friday travel deals, including domestic and international flight specials from only R199, plus huge savings on holiday packages. The flight sale starts at 9am on Black Friday.
- Sunglasses Hut
Get up to 60% off.
Another e-commerce store which specialises in clothes, shoes and other accessories is offering up to 80% off, but warns that this offer is on limited stock.
