Coffeeflation – the price of a cappuccino

The price of coffee is rising each year, yet scores of consumers are still willing to wait in queues for their morning kick from their local barrista. Coffee remains the second most traded commodity in the world after oil. In the interest of keeping you bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, Moneybags investigated the cost of a cappuccino at some of South Arica’s favourite coffee venues.

But first, our moneysaving tips:
•    Try not to make a takeaway coffee a daily habit. If you’re tipping the barrista, this seemingly innocent R20 a day adds up to around  R600 per month, which is R 7200 a year. Is it really worth it?
•    Take advantage of loyalty programmes. Vida have a cashback loyalty card, Deluxe Coffeeworks gives you a free coffee for every 10, and Truth runs a happy hour between 7am and 8am every morning where all coffee is only R10. If you’re going to spend, make sure you’re saving, too.
•    Learn how to make great coffee at home. Get a good plunger or espresso maker and buy your ground coffee or coffee beans from stores like Deluxe or Origin. That way, your coffee at home will taste just as good as a takeaway.
•  Keep fit and healthy. The healthier you eat and the more you exercise, the less chance you have of feeling a slump and needing caffeine.
