Holiday rentals the easy way

If you are still planning on going away this holiday, or perhaps in the New Year, then you might have noticed that accommodation can be tricky to find, and pretty expensive too. Moneybags journalist, Ashleigh Brown, reviews Air B&B, House Trip, and VactionHomeRentals.com to see how easy they are to use, and if it is worth booking through them.

If you are planning on taking a trip this December, or even next year, then you know that finding accommodation can be difficult, and often times can leave you a little cash strapped. A lot of people, when they go away, like to stay in fancy hotels, which is great – provided you can afford it.

But, for people like me, I spend so much time taking in the sites,  (and have a low budget when it comes to travelling) that I just want a clean, and cosy place to sleep in.

However, these days, you don’t need to make a compromise between good quality, and affordability. With the internet right at your fingertips, finding accommodation as you are planning to jet set around the world has become so much easier.

Air B&B

Air B&B allows you to find hosts who have rooms, apartments, or houses to rent for a period of time. Meaning you can find a home away from home while you are travelling.

There are an abundance of different hosts from all across the world. When you get to the main menu, you type in your destination, your arrival and departure date, and how many people need a place to stay.

Once you have set your destination, and your travel dates, a list of properties will show up. You can also also change your price range, so that only properties within your price will be visible. You can change your currency, and Air B&B does show prices in Rands.

When looking through the various options, there will be a map that shows where the properties are located in the city.

Most of the places, depending on how new they are, have reviews from guests, and photos for you to see what it looks like. This helps to give you an honest ‘feel’ for the place, and what you are paying for.

One of the quirky things about Air B&B is that you can even find accommodation in “igloos or castles” as their website says which will make any trip even more exciting.

Make sure, as always, to stick to your budget. If you are going with friends, then you can split the costs of the accommodation.

If you aren’t going away this holiday, but have an extra place that you want to rent out to world travellers, then you can also do that on Air B&B. To sign up to host one of your spaces is free. And there are different options you can choose form when it comes to reservations and bookings.

House Trip

House Trip works in much the same way as Air B&B, but just not as exotic. You type in your destination, dates and how many people are going to be staying, and the search will come up with a list of properties.

The prices can only be shown in Euros, American Dollars, British Pounds and Swiss Francs. So make sure that you convert the price back to Rands to see how much it is going to cost you.

The prices that are given on House Trip are the total for the number of nights you are going to stay. If you are with friends, then you can easily split that price between everyone, to make it a little more affordable.

You can also choose your price range, and filter out properties depending on if you want a house, apartment, studio, boat or even castle to stay in. Just like with Air B&B, there will be a map to show you exactly where the property is located.

VacationHomeRentals.com

This rental site is hosted by TripAdvisor, the website which gives you tips, tricks and information on locations around the world, all generated by travellers.

“In 2004, I created VacationHomeRentals.com to provide renters with the perfect platform to find other memorable vacation homes. Twenty dollars may not buy what it used to, but the goal of our family business remains the same: affordable vacation rentals you can trust,” said Tom Gimore, the founder of VactionHomeRentals.com.

As with the other two sites, you type in your destination, and dates and a list of available properties will appear. You can also choose your price range, but cannot choose what type of property you would like to stay in.

You can, however, choose if you want the price per night, or per week, depending on how long you are staying. The prices only seem to show in Dollars.

Remember that accommodation is just one part of travelling. You have to factor in the airplane tickets, spending costs for food, transport, and tours, as well as some extra money to buy little souvenir’s and presents.

If you are booking through a travel agent, and have found a place that is cheaper than what they are offering, then speak to them about it. Check out sites like TripAdvisor or TravelStart to find out about what are the best sites to see, how to get around, and even what the weather is going to be like when you go.

Make sure you do all your homework, and get the best possible deal for your holiday, so that you can have fun and not worry about having an empty wallet when you come back home.
