Knysna Oyster Festival

Are you unsure about what do with the family during this winter holiday?

Look no further, the annual Knysna Oyster Festival, from 1 to 10 July 2016, is a jam-packed programme of numerous events to accommodate every member of the family. Tickle your taste buds at all the oyster hotspots around Knysna. Fitness lovers can get those endorphins going on a scenic trail run; kids can enjoy numerous activities; and there’s live entertainment for those who would like to sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

Along with the all the restaurant specials in and around Knysna, during the ten day festival, don’t miss out on deliciously wonderful highlights such as the oyster, bubbly and chocolate experience which will be hosted at the Simola Hotel on 3 July at 18:00.

For those who consider themselves to be wine connoisseurs, learn about the latest trends in the wine industry while tasting wine from some of South Africa’s best wine estates at the Knysna wine festival. Don’t miss out on the gourmet food and craft stalls in Bedouin with seating and live entertainment at the Night Market. The Knysna wine festival and night market takes place on 4 and 5 July 2016, it is R130 per night at the Knysna wine festival and entrance to the night market is free.

You can also dig into a variety of seafood dishes on Seafood Wednesday, taking place on 6 July. It will start off with a seafood walk around participating restaurants, followed by a seafood braai in the afternoon and an oyster shucking and eating competition in the early evening. Entrance into the venue is R20 per person, and children under 12 get in for free. This allows access to everything on the programme, with the exception of the Flavours of Knysna event.

The Flavours of Knysna, is the night when some of the best restaurants in Knysna, Sedgfield and surrounds compete for the titles for the ‘Best Dressed Oyster’ and ‘Best Dressed Stand’ with an enticing show of oyster preparations and stands which will be judged by the public. Pay R175 and receive a booklet of coupons that can be traded for tastings at each restaurant stand between 18:00 and 20:30, as well as a wine tasting glass with which to sample a selection of Cape and Regional wines. There will also be a three course Tabasco® inspired taster menu with a variety of entrées.

Trail runs

With all the overindulging in delicious dishes why not squeeze in a morning workout and enjoy a scenic run on the Elephant Free range trail between 3 and 8 July at 9:00. For the first time, the Momentum Health OatWell DualX, powered by PeptoPro, will be a part of the festival which will offer both trail running and mountain biking starting at the Festival Pavilion; this will take place on 7 July at 8:00.

Take it easy

For a R100 per ticket, get ready to get your giggle on The Pick ‘n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival Comedy Shuckle, featuring the talented Schalk Bezuidenhout and Kagiso Mokgadi.

And for those who came to kick back and relax, there are always the bridge tournaments and bingo on 1 July, a bowls tournament and the all new Forest Family Dam Ride. There’s also the all-new Opera Gala Concerts on 7 and 8 July for those who appreciate the classics.

Something for the kids

The Pick n Pay Young Oyster Festival presented by Humpty Dumpty Windmeul Eggs offers loads of creative activities and entertainment, such as cooking lessons for kids between the ages of two and 10 years old, as well as arts and crafts. They can challenge themselves at the Dare2Dash obstacle course; there will also be The Momentum Health Kiddies Zone which is a fully supervised, secure and fun area for children aged two to 12 with great age-appropriate activities such as jumping castles, sand art, colouring and drawing as well as jumping rope games at the Festival Pavilion.
