Nine West and Mango to close their doors in SA

The House of Busby which owns well-known international brands in South Africa including Forever New, Aldo and Guess, announced last week that it will be closing their Mango and Nine West branded free-standing stores effective March 2017.

The decision was reportedly based on portfolio performance and market feedback.

“The company regularly reviews the portfolio’s performance and relevance to market and decided to move the Mango business into the store-in-store concept within Edgars. Similarly, with Nine West we will keep a wholesale presence in the SA market. Busby has a long standing joint venture relationship with EDCON for Topshop and Topman brands as well as the wholesale supply and store in store execution for brands such as Guess, Aldo, Forever New, Nine West, Steve Madden, etc. The Mango brand presence will now shift solely into the Edgars store-in-store environment and Nine West (handbags) as a wholesale arrangement,” Nine West said in a statement.

Though a total of 48 stores will be closing, the head of The House of Busby’s marketing department Leeanne Adolph, said that job losses were not expected as result of this decision, as staff would be accommodated within the broader company.

Closing sales

Both Mango and Nine West have announced their closing sales but have not given any specific prices or discounts of the clothes. Instead customers are being encouraged to contact their local stores for sale prices and available sizes.

Over the last month both Nine West and Mango have been running sales on all their items and customers have been walking away with ‘buy 1 get 1 free’ specials on shoes, 30 % discounts on all new arrivals and ‘All stock must go’ specials for between R399 – R999. These sales are specific to the stores and not online.

The brand is shifting focus and is motivated by their decision. “We are confident that this decision will focus the business on the growth of the newly acquired brands and optimisation of the existing portfolio, re-emphasising the importance of great customer service and a commitment to delivering consistent, quality, international product at prices that reflect customer value,” added Nine West.
